Dear Colleagues, As you know, our accreditation seven-year visit will be October 21-23, 2019. This summer, several of our colleagues have been busy working on the Year-Seven Report. I would like to thank the members of our Accreditation committee who have been working tirelessly on the report for more than a year. Thank you Dr. Ruby Hayden, Dr. Suzy Ames, Katherine Kelley, April Ake, Andrea Westman, Doug Emory, Sally Heilstedt, Jenny Rogoff, Xieng Lim, Erin Smith, Lisa Meehan, Christine Turpin, and Cathy Copeland. I’d also like to thank Andrea Olson for working for the past several months organizing our policies and procedures, and for spending much of this month providing a unifying voice to the report. Soon, we will be sending the full report to the Board of Trustees for them to review before their August 12th meeting, Dr. Ruby Hayden (our Accreditation Liaison Officer) has shared things we can all do to prepare for the visit: What can I do to prepare for accreditation? Everyone at the college should be able describe how their work supports core theme and mission fulfillment. If you are not sure how to describe this, talk with your supervisor. The most important thing individual faculty can do to support accreditation is make sure that you are assessing course, program, and global outcomes AND using that data to improve student learning. In addition to doing the work, we need you to document your work. What can I do to learn more about accreditation? Join our committee, we are always looking for more folks to help! Dear Colleagues, I hope you’ve had a great week. Thank you to all of you who are working this summer teaching classes, supporting our students, and preparing for Fall quarter. Thank you also to our Outreach team and volunteers for having such a positive presence in the community. Finally, a special welcome to our new colleagues who started July 1, I had the pleasure of welcoming many of you to campus this week. As a reminder, Amy’s Update is on a reduced and abbreviated summer schedule. The next issue of the Update will be out the week of July 29th. Now, for news from around the College: External Engagement Washington Executive Leadership Academy (WELA) Wednesday, I was pleased to address this year’s WELA cohort at their closing retreat. Topics of discussion included: Balancing on and off-campus work; Prioritizing external engagement; Fundraising; and Working with the Board of Trustees. Congratulations to Dean Mike Potter for finishing his WELA year! OneRedmond Board Meeting Today, I attended the OneRedmond Board meeting. As I’ve mentioned before, I appreciate the opportunity to serve on this board for the past six years with other business leaders from the Redmond area. College Community Leadership Team Implicit Bias Training Today, I joined the Leadership Team for Implicit Bias training with Peg Balachowski, Associate Dean and Sharon Lewis, HR Director from Everett Community College. I was pleased that so many Leadership Team members participated in this initial opportunity to build upon our Community of Belonging year by better understanding implicit bias and how it impedes the progress of our students and our college. Dear Colleagues, I hope you enjoyed our first Friday with summer hours, last week. While I understand that some of you aren’t able to shift your schedules, I really hope that you will be able to find time to get out and enjoy our brief burst of warm weather. While our campus remains busy with Summer quarter beginning next Monday, and planning and preparing for Fall quarter, it is one of the few times our campus does quiet down, even if it’s ever so slightly. With that, as I mentioned previously, Amy’s Update is on a reduced and abbreviated summer schedule. The next issue of the Update will be out the week of July 15th. Now, for news from around the college: External Engagement Testifying before the King County Council Monday, 6/17, Dr. Ruby Hayden and I testified in front of the King County Council about the need for support of critical advising and counseling needed to guide our youth through K12 and our community and technical college system. It was important that we shared with them that our fellow colleges do not receive direct state support for advising and counseling services. Therefore, our college, and many others, is falling woefully short of the national standard for advising, which is 250 students for every one advisor. Currently our advisor to student ratio is 800:1 for undecided students. I will continue to keep you posted as the Council determines spending of the Puget Sound Taxpayer Accountability Account (PSTAA) funding. The Seattle Times ran a great article about it last week, if you want to learn more. Thank you Ruby for...
