Dear Colleagues, It was a busy week on campus with a series of interviews for the next Chief Information Officer and several full-time faculty positions. Thank you to all of you who participated in the hiring committees, open forums, and team discussions, as we work to fill these important positions. I hope to make a formal announcement next week about our new CIO. Overall, this is an exciting time as we contemplate bringing in new employees who can contribute to growing our college in new and different ways, as well as promoting current employees into different roles allowing them to continue to contribute as well to the college community. As we go into Memorial Day weekend, I hope that you have time to relax and reflect as we honor service members we’ve lost. As a reminder, the campus will be closed on Sunday and Monday. External Engagement KING-TV Story As I mentioned in last week’s Amy’s Update, KING-TV was on campus to film a segment for their special feature on colleges that ran this past Monday morning. They visited LWTech to highlight how affordable community and technical colleges are when compared to public four-year colleges and universities. Click here to view the story. Thanks to the Machine Technology faculty and students as well as Mary Powers, Alisa Stromberg, and Casey Melnrick for being on hand to talk with the news crew. Title IX Training On Monday, I attended Title IX Training at Edmonds Community College. Thank you Anthony Bowers and Mark Ward for joining me. This is an important topic for our college to...

Dear Colleagues, It was great to see so many of you at Tuesday’s All Staff meeting. I appreciated the opportunity for all of us to share the tremendous work going on across the College. I have heard several comments about how positive the meeting was. All of you have worked very hard this year to support students at all levels of their educational pathway. Thank you for all that you do for our students and the College! College Community As you know, we are the honored recipient of a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success grant. The next step in this grant is securing a physical space for the Center that includes enough space for: An office for the Coordinator A lounge area for veterans to gather, relax, hold meetings, etc. A resource area with a few computers, printer, printed material, etc. Ideally, we also want to create a space that supports positive mental and physical health for our most vulnerable veterans, many of whom transition from military life to civilian life wit, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or physical disabilities: Closely located to elevators Multiple entry/exit options Big enough to not feel “claustrophobic” Close to other student areas like ASG, clubs, etc. In Fall and Winter quarters, the College engaged in an information gather phase that included open forums. This culminated in the Facilities Planning Council making the difficult recommendation to move the current employee lounge. However, other room changes on the instructional side created a new opportunity and Dr. Stern graciously volunteered East 131 for the Veteran Center to both meet the...

Dear Colleagues, We’re a little over a month away from commencement. It’s hard to believe how fast this year has flown by. As we near the final stretch of spring quarter, know how much I appreciate all you are doing and the hard work you put into your job each day to help our students succeed. Thank you! External Engagement New Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Degrees Presentation to the State Board Last week, Mike Potter, Dr. Suzy Ames, Dean Jamilyn Penn, Monta Frost, Antwinett Lee and Phil Trumbo presented to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) three statements of need for BAS degrees in Digital Gaming and Interactive Media, Dental Hygiene, and Nursing. Dr. Elliot Stern commented, “The message we sent to leaders across the State yesterday, by presenting three statements of need at once, and by doing it so competently, is that LWTech is moving fast and will soon be a State leader among BAS-holding institutions if not thought to be already. No one in that room thinks of us as the VoTech, no one.” I also heard from former Dean and current Workforce Development Director for the SBCTC, Nancy Dick, that our team “knocked it out of the park.” Congratulations on a job well done! Assessment, Teaching and Learning Conference Last week, Sally Heilstedt, Jo Nelson and Mihaela Cosma presented at the Assessment, Teaching and Learning conference in Vancouver, WA. Dr. Elliot Stern reports, “Sally and Jo presented on the classroom as a Community of Practice (the theme of this year’s conference) for students and instructors, Sally and her counterparts from...

Dear Colleagues, This week, I’m attending a two-day Leadership Eastside “Executive Insight” workshop (you’ll read more about that below). I’m a strong believer in the importance of ongoing training and professional development. We have several free resources available to you on campus and online through the Engagement and Learning Center and Lynda.com. I encourage you to sign up to explore what’s available to you. I hope you’ll take advantage of these opportunities. External Engagement OneRedmond “State of the City” Breakfast On Tuesday, I attended the OneRedmond “State of the City” breakfast presented by Redmond Mayor John Marchione. The Mayor presented an update on citywide initiatives and future projects. Leadership Eastside Executive Insight Workshop Yesterday and today, I’m participating in the two-day “Executive Insight,” workshop that is being organized by Leadership Eastside. The two-day conference is focused on adaptive leadership and the management of systems. Directed Self Placement (DSP) Workshop at Highline College Last week, Wes Mantooth, attended a Directed Self Placement (DSP) workshop at Highline College along with representatives from other community and technical colleges within our system. Wes said, “Our English and Math departments are both moving toward DSP as one of our placement mechanisms, so it was very helpful for me to join this conversation with others at various stages of implementing DSP at their own schools; particularly since LWTech is part of a consortium in which we honor each other’s placement decisions. It’s good that we align our procedures with these other institutions and get on board with the planned sharing of DSP resources.” Thank you Wes for carrying this work forward....
